Program - Competition & Training

Summer Program

Summer competition runs most Sunday mornings throughout terms 4 and 1. We are one of only two Little Athletic Centres who have Sunday competition to attract families who cannot participate on a Saturday due to other sporting commitments.

Due to the availability of Lakeside Stadium there are some weeks where we will compete later in the day or relocate to another track. We are very fortunate to have a terrific relationship with Williamstown Little Athletics Centre who allow us use of their track in Newport when ours is unavailable.

Track Events

  • Track / Sprints – 70m, 100m, 200m, Hurdles
  • Distance - 400m, 800m, 1500m

Field Events

  • Jumps - Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump
  • Throws - Shot Put, Discus, Javelin

Additionally there are events and specifications that are deemed inappropriate for inclusion at all levels of competition and athletic skill development activities. There are three rotating schedules. A, B and C so that each Age group has an opportunity to participate in all events. View Schedule for more details.

On Track (Under 6 & 7 Age Groups)

On Track is an athletic skills development program, that aims to provide children in the U/6 and U/7 age groups with increased instruction, ample practice opportunities and ongoing motivation. This is equivalent to Auskick or Milo Cricket.

The program concentrates on teaching our younger athletes the fundamental motor skills of running, jumping, hopping and throwing in a non-competitive environment, whilst also focusing on active participation, learning and improving, having fun and experiencing excitement. By fostering friendships, decreasing the competition mindset and increasing prospects for learning, the program is able to deliver all the above essential aspects.

On Track athletes are also offered a number of opportunities during the season to participate in a competition format, with events such as 70m, 100m, Long Jump and High Jump (Scissors) being offered.

View Calendar for full program dates.

Winter Program - Cross Country

Winter Cross-Country competition runs on Saturday mornings over terms 2 and 3. We compete in the Bayside XC Club competition.  Go to the website for more information. (link www.baysidexc.org.au).

Training & Coaching

In addition to the weekly competition, SMDLAC endeavours to offer skills development coaching and training for registered athletes aged U9 and above throughout the summer competition season only.

Coaching/ training is usually held at Lakeside mid week after school (weather permitting) and usually involves a combination of throws, jumps and track.

All sessions are under the guidance of track and field coaches. Parents must remain at the track for supervision. We are always looking for parents with an athletics background who are interested in assisting with coaching.

Please note: coaching provided by our club is for basic skills development and if more advanced coaching is desired, speak to a committee member or go to https://www.athletics.com.au/coach-framework/
